Anil Kumble is without doubt India's greatest spinner of all time - not only in terms of wickets but also by being a member of the winning team on more occasions than any other bowler in the history of Indian cricket. Be it Test matches or ODIs, Anil has always been a match-winner. If in Test matches he is a no-nonsense wicket-taking bowler, in ODIs, he can attack and contain at will. Quiet, precise, ruthless - Anil goes about his business of demolishing the opposition with clinical efficiency, based on the simple principles of line and length, and the desire to make the batsman play every ball.

Trained as a mechanical engineer, Anil discovered early the virtues of precision and accuracy, which he has put to telling effect on the field.

Luckily for India, he opted to pursue a career in cricket with equal zest. A strong will and strong Ranji Trophy performances for Karnataka made him force his way into the Indian team. When he was 19, Anil made his debut on 9th August, 1990 against England. Two years later he took his first five-wicket haul (6-53) against South Africa at Johannesburg, to announce his arrival on the world stage. In 1993-94, he bowled a magical ODI spell (6-12) to crush the West Indies in the final of the Hero Cup in Calcutta.

Never termed a classical leg-spinner (primarily because he is not a huge turner of the ball) in the real sense of the word, Anil has proved in his 15 long years in international cricket, that his style was equally effective. With a clever mix of top-spinners, googlies, leg-breaks, flight and a variation of pace, he has outwitted many a batsman. Facing a vary tall spinner, hurling deliveries at short of medium-pace, with every ball on target, can be a very daunting task. As his record suggests, he has won many leg-before-wickets by fooling many batsmen into playing across the line.

The mid-nineties saw the emergence of Anil Kumble as a mature strike bowler. With state team-mates Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad sharing the country's new ball, India finally had variation in its bowling department - pace, swing and spin, and much-needed support for him in the absence of Kapil Dev. But even though he was a proven match-winner, he needed that one performance which would take him to cricketing immortality. It didn't take him long as on an eventful afternoon at the Ferozshah Kotla, in early February of 1999, he single-handedly spun out the entire Pakistan team in the second innings to become only the second bowler in Test match history to capture all 10 wickets in an innings.

Around this period, another prodigious spin-bowling talent emerged in the form of Harbhajan Singh. Funnily, it was Anil who spotted him. Today, they form the most lethal spin combination in the world; and the mighty Australians can vouch for that. Since 2000-01, they have toyed, teased and tormented the Aussies with fantastic results. To do so with such remarkable consistency against the best team in the world speaks volumes.

4) Maria Kirilenko (20 year old Russian)* I’d pay to see her and Sharapova play
doubles together.

ONE PARAGRAPH THAT EXPLAINS LIFE! - Arthur Ashe

Arthur Ashe, the legendary Wimbledon player was dying of AIDS which he got due to infected blood he received during a heart surgery in 1983. >From world over, he received letters from his fans, one of which conveyed: "Why does GOD have to select you for such a bad disease"? To this Arthur Ashe replied: "The world over -- 50 million children start playing tennis, 5 million learn to play tennis, 500,000 learn professional tennis, 50,000 come to the circuit, 5000 reach the grand slam, 50 reach Wimbledon, 4 to semi final, 2 to the finals, when I was holding a cup I never asked GOD 'Why me?'. And today in pain I should not be asking GOD 'Why me?' " "Happiness keeps you Sweet, Trials keep you Strong, Sorrow keeps you Human, Failure keeps you humble and Success keeps you glowing, but only Faith & Attitude Keeps you going...

IPL bids announced; SRK, Preity, Ambani bag teams

After an extensive wait, IPL governing council chairman Lalit Modi announced the names of the winning bidders, who shelled out big money to own the teams. The UB Group chairman, Dr Vijay Mallya, won the bid for his home team Bangalore for $111.6 million as his dream of being associated with the Mumbai team came to an end when Reliance Industries Ltd chief Mukesh Ambani topped the bids for the Mumbai team with $111.9 million. Dr Mallya will still be happy as he won the bid for his home team, Bangalore. Actor Shah Rukh Khan, along with Juhi Chawla and Jay Meath, won the bid for Kolkata for $75.09 million. Actress Preity Zinta and her boyfriend Ness Wadia were declared the winning bidders for the Mohali team for $76 million. Among the high-profile names of winners were GMR Holdings, who won the bid for the Delhi team ($84 million), India Cements for Chennai ($91 million) and Deccan Chronicle for Hyderabad ($107.01 million). Emerging Media won the bid for the Jaipur team for $67 million. Said Modi: “We can say that all the hard work has paid off and that the IPL is here to stay.” The bids by ICICI, Sahara and Futures Group were disqualified as late entries. [The process makes IPL richer by about Rs 3,000 crores (or $724 million) even before it launches its Twenty20 tournament in April. The eight successful bids, for a period of 10 years, have enriched the BCCI’s already swelling coffers and added to its share of the media rights sold for $1.026 billion, which would fetch the BCCI $100 million annually, according to BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah, PTI reports. [Shah Rukh Khan said he would like to see former India captain Sourav Ganguly leading his outfit in the Indian Premier League, PTI reports. He added, “I have already decided on the entertainment part, but we have not decided on the core and content of the team. We want to put together a winning combination, for which I would definitely seek advice of the experts. I don’t have anyone in mind right now but we would seek expert views on that,” he told CNN-IBN.“I hope Ganguly leads my team,” he said, adding, “It’s not about money. The idea is to nurture youngsters and give them more platform for playing cricket. I have a huge passion for the game and I want to be part of every sport. I guess I would have to make more films to ensure we can run the team.” [Ms Preity Zinta, too, sounded excited about owning the Mohali team. “All I want to say is that it was fantastic and a great opportunity. And I’m happy that we won the bid,” she was quoted by PTI as saying. [Liquor baron Vijay Mallya said, “I was the under-bidder for Mumbai but I’m happy I won the Bangalore team.”] Asked if Shah Rukh Khan was bidding just to use cricket as a means to promote his films, Mr Modi said, “Shah Rukh loves cricket and that’s why he has invested his money. It has nothing to do with film promotions. We have heard similar complaints in the past but the board has never endorsed those views.” Fans of some of the contracted international players may be disappointed in the first season as they would skip the Twenty20 tournament, which begins April 18, owing to national commitments, but Mr Modi said the pool was big enough to compensate. “A team needs only four players from abroad and we already have a huge number of them contracted with us. You will have enough of them from day one,” he added. A total of 59 matches are to be played over 44 days with ICC umpires officiating in the games, which would be broadcast live on SET Max.

Sachin ton inspires Cricket

Century number 39:

HE'S AT IT AGAIN: Not one other batsman look half as much in command as Sachin at the moment.
At Adelaide, Sachin just wants to live the moment
Thirty-nine and counting. Sachin Tendulkar has been the subject of many debates, about whether he should retire or not, if he was losing his touch, or if he should also be clubbed with those who have outlived their utility.
All of those debates were dumped in the trash as Adelaide rose as one to salute the best in the business.
The notable thing about Tendulkar’s 39th Test hundred was how he looked to be in a zone of his own. Not one other batsman looked half as much in command as him, which was a bit surprising on what is considered, at least as of now, to be a batting strip.
None of these things bothered Tendulkar, as he carved up his hundred in style. Beginning with a cracking straight drive, he played all the shots in his armoury. When he does that, the opposition can only watch and fetch the ball.
This knock was important in many ways. India, after the famous win at Perth, are keen to draw level in the series, so it is vital to have a big score to defend in the first innings.

It essentially meant that the batting had to click and in view of the fact that they went in with five bowlers, it was important that one of the top order players, or two, had to come to the party.
On a personal front, this will almost certainly be Tendulkar’s last Test on Australian soil, and he wanted to leave a mark. While that applies to several other players, Tendulkar is on a plateau of his own, and by his own standards, it had to be a big one.
The knock also held the innings together, which was vital after Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly were sent back by the bowlers.
What threatened to look like a moderate target for the Aussies was made a much more challenging one, thanks to Tendulkar and his fine partnership with VVS Laxman.
Those 126 runs, for the fifth wicket, displayed some of the best batting seen on the series.
Though Tendulkar did play an odd miscued shot, especially against the spin of Brad Hogg, his focus on the job was complete, and India grew as he did, as it always has.
Well begun is half done, as they say, but at this moment its time to sit back and savour the moment. Players like this come once in a lifetime, and we are surely lucky that we share our time with Sachin Tendulkar.
